    Hi Joe, Very nice, I wish so bad I could get to a Type In. When you tighten or loosen the key tension on the bottom front of a SCM Electric, there is a tiny needle that moves and gauges where you are on the left side. On my 1972 SCM Electra 110, I've got mine set between 2 and 3, seems easy to still type, but less sensitive to make an accidental strike. Bob Ross would say, we don't have mistakes, just Happy Accidents. The SCM Electra 210 and 220, these have the Power Return, that feature is cool, yeah it saves your hand and some time and it's a bit Fun to FIRE a tank cannon like Carriage, but, it's more wear and tear on the motors, and repair guys I've spoken to including our Friend D. Jensen over at Phoenix Typewriters, agree that the motors will typically burn out faster on the Power Return Models then if you just had the manual return, as it's one less thing that, although powerful motor has to run. You will miss that manual return at the end of the line. There's almost something rewarding to reach out and connect to the machine and the work, and manually push the carriage back. In all my time working and cleaning my SCM 110, I've never taken that panel off the back left over the belts, as you can still disassemble the machine. Next time for fun I'll do that. Fun fact you may already know this, but that bottom plate cover on the machine it's on the Manuals too like the Galaxie, when next you remove it, give it a flip and you will see when Smith Corona made these machines, they would stamp out the bottom and use it as a cover by flipping it around. Now that's good sound design and lowering waste. These are absolutely amazing and fun machines to work on, they were and are absolutely a beast of a work horse for any Novel or Book you're working on. And being electric, your hands won't tire from smashing through on a more therapeutic machine as I call them. An Electric 60s-70's SCM typewriter be it for Sears, Singer, Montgomery Wards, or just Smith Corona, they are Dream Machines. I like my 110, has the short carriage, with a manual return, and outside of power cord and Color, it's the direct Twin to my Galaxie Deluxe, even though that one I have is from 1964. It's really neat to put them side by side and they look identical. ❤

    Hello! When watching this video, I was interested in your comment on the plastic spindle mechanism. I agree that the plastic peg is inconsistent with the overall quality of this typewriter. It is more disappointing to me in that one the the pegs broke off when I was changing the ribbon. I put too hard when pulling off the ribbon spool. Is there anyway to repair or replace this spindle peg? Thank you!

      I’ve never had to repair one, but perhaps a tiny 4/40 screw could be threaded into the plastic disc from underneath, serving as the peg.

    I enjoy typing on my Electra 120, and my Coronamatic 2500, except when I want less noise while I think about what to write.😂 Two Gates Polyflex 3M315 v-belts in polyurethane work pretty well as replacements in the Electra 120. On my SCM Electra 120, the original front belt is 310 mm long, and the rear one is 320 mm long. I figure the two 3M315 belts make the middle pulley turn a little faster than the original belts. • @tcwyse
    @tcwyse 3 дні тому

    Are you certain the copy set relies on slipping? My observation is that it's a kind of continuously variable transmission. When tension is increased, the main drive belt is forced into a smaller radius, deeper into the pulley, and since the insides of the primary and secondary pulleys are connected and free to slide back and forth, that pinches the secondary belt and causes it to move into a larger radius. Take a close look and see if that looks right to you. It is possible with the vee belts to get slower speeds by increasing the range of the transmission. The trouble is that the range can exceed width of the belt and it'll get sucked into the pulley and jam. The system is really clever! Take a second look at it.

    Thank you Joe, another good video, here are some electrics too, even the in europe rare to get SCM . Yes, the carriage slamming is anoying me and my dest too. In trying to reduce mechanical stress i support the return a bit with the right hand, so that the hard stoping is a bit softer. For fast touchtyping these things are the weapon of choice.

    Good one again. I actually learned typing on a turquoise Smith Corona electric in the early sixties. My mother upgraded from her Underwood(?) portable (it came with and in a case). Included was a touch typing course on LP records and a dictation sized printed notebook. I learned to type in a couple of weeks, except the numeral row keys! My first personal typewriter was, of course, an SCM Office Electric bought new at a typewriter store in 1976 or 1978. In many ways it is my favorite typewriter today. Imagine all the time and money spent on my grail search essentially to learn I already had my grail. Fun through, and I do enjoy typing on most of the others. I trust you are well and happy and enjoying your retirement, All best.

    Hi Joe, Did you work on this shutter or any others further? If you wanted more variance in the shutter speed, you could have the string wrap around different diameter pulleywheels which are fixed on the shutter axis, similar to changing the belt speeds on tools or a record player. Would love to see some more photography videos!

    My Royal QDR isn’t printing very dark. I’m going to get one of these silk ribbons and see if that resolves my problem. Could a hard platen cause the print to be light?

    • @Joe_VanCleave
      @Joe_VanCleave 5 днів тому

      Try using a backing sheet of thicker paper, like construction paper, it can simulate what a softer platen imprint can look like. Some nylon ribbons are inked darker than others. Ribbons Unlimited have good nylon ribbons. Also, I buy bulk ribbon on 330 yard spools from Baco Ribbon, they are darkly inked. There is an adjustment in the machine that can affect print darkness, called “ring and cylinder,” it adjusts the fore-aft position of the platen relative to the type guide. But that rarely gets misadjusted on its own. A more common cause is when the platen roller gets hard, it shrinks, thus affecting the ring & cylinder adjustment.

    Goodness Joe, A video I've missed, just when you think you've caught up and seen them all, actually there's some camera videos I've not seen but need too. I save those for when it's been awhile between posts and I need a fix lol. My Royal Aristocrat Special has no skipping issues, but my SCM Galaxie Deluxe does, and I blame the use over the years with a power space bar, not sure there is a way to fix that, but having the Typewriter repair Bible should certainly help. I highly recommend those repair manuals by Ted Munk, my God are they thorough, so much highly detailed instruction and knowledge, it's very impressive and being spiral spine it lays flat open on the table. I want mine autographed, a repair manual, yes I want all 3 I have signed! Maybe one day. Highly recommend them and thank you Joe for telling me about them. Available on LuLu.com so many different ones along with the Big Bible of Typewriter repair. ❤

    Hi Joe, I love watching you Type, it's inspiring. Good to see the Royal O up and running. You're absolutely right, it's much easier to write on a machine you like the looks of, and/or feel, I think of it as like the machine is talking some you can understand and enjoy listening to, the way they make you feel. Absolutely, it's how I feel about 3 I've been favoring right now, My '59 Hermes 3000, '64 SCM Galaxie Deluxe, and the 1990 brother EP-43. Been using all three to write a cosmic horror, most of which was written with the brother thermal typewriter it's nearing 200 pages, single spaced and about 150 of those pages are thermal. When you got a machine you click with, enjoy it, truly a beautiful amalgamation of thought, mind, body, soul, and machine, to paper. I have a big project coming up and it will call the need of my Hermes 3000 and so I'll be doing a full service cleaning on it, and I'll be using the repair manual I got for it by Ted Munk and feel I'll be able to do it a bit more confident now with that, thank you for the link to that and the other repair manuals I picked up. The ill dispatch you a clean new letter from that Hermes machine before I work on a Top Secret highly classified project, can't tell much as it will spoil it, but it's definitely going to be a great recreation of documents that will make you swear time travel was involved. Very excited about that project. I think if I had to pick between the two, I would probably go with the O, as it's a better fit, I like the way it looks and sounds over the varsity. But hard to tell over the Internet, it's not until a physical contact has been made to make a final decision, although I had always loved the Hermes 3000 only ever saw one online, but I knew I'd love it....well in truth, that not exactly correct, I did see and type on one in an antique store a good 25-30 years ago. It's seafoam green and curvy body just sang to me. Looking back it was $60 bucks and I remember thinking wow that's a lot of money for an old Typewriter. Fate had it that I would own one eventually. Okay, back to work.
